Prayer flags essentially carry our prayers via the wind to get them answered.

The red, blue, yellow, white and green represent elements like air, fire, water and earth. White symbolises air, red is fire. Green is water, yellow is earth, and blue is wind.

The reason why they are put high above the roof is so that they flutter in the wind. It is said that they emit positive spiritual vibrations and that the prayers are carried by the wind like silent prayers. It’s a good omen to receive them as a gift.

The horizontal ones are called Lung Dar and the vertical ones are Dar Cho.

Tibetan prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom.

Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be spread by the wind and bring goodwill and compassion to benefit all beings.

When disposing of old prayer flags one should burn them so that the smoke may carry their blessings to the heavens.

You may also choose to let your old Tibetan prayer flags fade and disintegrate naturally, hanging new prayer flags up with old ones. The contrast between old and new prayer flags is a reminder of impermanence and the continuing cycle of birth and death.

The following are the wrong dates according to the Tibetan calendar:

  • 10th and 22nd of the first, fifth and ninth months
  • 7th and 19th of the second, sixth and tenth months
  • 4th and 16th of the third, seventh and eleventh months
  • 1st and 13th of the fourth, eighth and twelfth months

Controlling the Elements

Here is the profound instruction Controlling the Elements [jungwa ur nang], which controls the obstacles caused by engaging in activities on the wrong astrological dates.

In the eastern direction, put iron [any material made of iron] and recite the mantra mama kara kara ye soha.In the south, put water and recite mama kam kam ye soha.In the west, put fire [lighted incense or matches] and recite mama ram ram ye soha.In the north, earth [sand in an incense container or dirt from some other place] recite mama su su ye soha. In each corner put a bundle of various plants and recite mama pota pota ye soha.

Recite also the heart mantra of the eight appearances, om agani nigana achala mandala mataya soha. By reciting this, you won’t receive all the shortcomings and it is said that everything will be very auspicious and you will receive great happiness and goodness.

This method can stop all the obstacles and negativities that arise from starting activities related to living and dying at the wrong time.
